Before this commit, running:
./checktestdata <spec_file>
would crash with:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::length_error'
what(): basic_string::_M_create
Aborted (core dumped)

is not expected by checktestdata, and it should be a filename instead. Still, checktestdata should return an error instead of crashing.

./checktestdata <spec_file> <directory>
would crash with:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::length_error'
  what():  basic_string::_M_create
Aborted (core dumped)

<directory> is not expected by checktestdata, and it should be a
filename instead. Still, checktestdata should return an error instead
of crashing.

There seems to be some weird mix of tabs vs spaces. otherwise LGTM.

Merged while resolving the whitespace issues in a74d332

I also removed the comments from the code as they're not that relevant there now that the issue is fixed and can also be found in the commit message.
